Tips of the Week
Quick, actionable advice from Benny the Blade and our experts
Water Deeply, Less Frequently
Instead of watering your lawn every day for short periods, water deeply 2-3 times per week. This encourages deeper root growth, making your lawn more drought-resistant. Aim for 1-1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation and fungal growth.
Mulch Matters
Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around trees, shrubs, and garden beds. Mulch helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, suppress weeds, and improve soil quality as it breaks down. Keep mulch a few inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot.
Seal Entry Points
Prevent pests from entering your home by sealing cracks and gaps around windows, doors, pipes, and foundation. Use caulk for small gaps and expanding foam for larger openings. Don't forget to check and repair damaged window screens and door sweeps.
Prune at the Right Time
Late winter or early spring (while trees are dormant) is the best time to prune most trees. Avoid pruning in fall when diseases are more easily spread. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches first, then shape as needed. For large branches or uncertain situations, consult a certified arborist.
