Pest prevention and pest control for Lancaster and Harrisburg homes

Simple steps to reduce pests around your home in early spring. Seal gaps, control moisture, and know when to call a pest control professional in South Central PA.

As the weather warms in Lancaster, Harrisburg, and the rest of South Central Pennsylvania, pests that overwintered or are waking up start looking for food, water, and shelter. A few steps in early spring can reduce problems later in the year. Here is what to do now and when to call a pest control professional.

Seal Entry Points

Check the outside of your home. Walk around the foundation, doors, windows, and where pipes or wires enter the house. Look for gaps, cracks, or holes. Mice can squeeze through openings the size of a dime. Ants and other insects need even less space. Use caulk, foam, or weather stripping to close those gaps. Pay attention to areas under siding, around vents, and where the foundation meets the frame.

Do not forget the garage and basement. Gaps under garage doors or around basement windows are common entry points. A tight fitting door sweep and sealed cracks go a long way.

Screen vents and chimneys. Make sure attic and crawl space vents are screened and in good shape. A cap on the chimney keeps out birds and bats as well as rain.

Reduce Moisture and Hiding Spots

Fix leaks and standing water. Fix leaky faucets, pipes, and gutters. Empty trays under potted plants and do not let water sit in bird baths or buckets for days. Many pests are drawn to moisture. In basements and crawl spaces, a dehumidifier can help. Keeping things dry makes your home less attractive to ants, centipedes, and others.

Move wood and mulch away from the foundation. Firewood stacked against the house gives pests a bridge inside. Keep it at least a few feet away and off the ground. Mulch piled high against the foundation can hold moisture and hide insects. Pull it back so there is a gap between the mulch and the siding.

Trim plants back. Shrubs and vines touching the house give pests cover and a path to the roof or siding. Trim them back so there is clear space between the plants and the structure.

Clean Up Food Sources

Store food in sealed containers. Pantry items in bags or open boxes invite ants and pantry pests. Use sealed plastic or glass containers for flour, cereal, and other dry goods. Wipe down counters and sweep regularly so crumbs do not build up.

Take out the trash regularly. Kitchen and bathroom trash should go out on a schedule. Use bins with tight fitting lids. Rinse recyclables before they go in the bin so they do not attract ants or other insects.

Pet food. Do not leave pet food out overnight. Store it in a sealed container. If you feed pets in the garage or basement, pick up bowls when they are done.

When to Call a Pest Control Professional

You already see pests inside. A few ants in spring can turn into a trail. If you see ants, termites, or other insects indoors, or signs like mud tubes or wings, get a professional inspection. Early treatment is usually simpler and less costly than waiting until the problem grows.

You had a problem last year. If you had ants, mice, or another pest last season, they may have overwintered nearby or found a way in. A proactive visit in early spring can target entry points and nesting areas before numbers build up.

You want a barrier treatment. Many homeowners schedule a perimeter or barrier treatment in spring to reduce ants, spiders, and other crawling pests before they get established. A licensed technician can apply product safely and explain what to expect.

Termites or bed bugs. These pests are not something to tackle on your own. If you suspect termites or bed bugs, call a pest control company that is licensed and experienced with these pests. They will inspect and recommend a proper treatment plan.

Staying on top of entry points, moisture, and food sources in early spring sets you up for a cleaner season. If you are in Lancaster, Harrisburg, York, or the surrounding area and want help with prevention or an existing pest issue, our team can assess your property and recommend the right next steps.
